When Ambrose Wells dies jumping out of his bedroom window in Axton House, forgetting to open it first, a distant relative with an unusual companion takes possession of the gothic estate at Point Bless, Virginia. But as they settle into their new surroundings, excited by rumours of ghosts, suicides and secret societies, they find themselves not just part of a mysterious ‘Game’, but determined to win it.
If you are going to read a haunted house story this year. Read this one. It’s brilliant. It’s different and I can tell you so little about it because the fun is watching how these mysterious threads pull together into one satisfying reveal.
This is the book version of a found footage movie. Made up of diary entries, notes, text book extracts and transcripts of audio recordings The Supernatural Enhancements tells the story of A and Niamh as they move in to an old manor house that A inherits from a distant relative. Whispers of ghosts and a secret society and the suicide of the previous owner pull A and Niamh to work through a series of puzzles and clues to solve the mystery of the house.
This is one of those books that I read so quickly and enjoyed it so much that I finished it and was instantly sad that I had no more book left to read.
There’s more mystery than there are scares, and more laughs than there are deep thoughts about the universe, for some that may mean the book isn’t chilling enough for a haunted house story but I enjoyed it as a more modern haunted house story. I guess I would class it as light hearted Halloween reading; thrilling, fun and mysterious.
Something just a little bit different…
